New talent – Clara Leff from São Paulo, Brazil.
Hi Clara Leff, great to meet you. Where are you originally from?
I was born in São Paulo, Brazil.
Where was your first mural? Is it still available to see today?
My first mural was done at “Vila das Belezas” in an event called “Coletivo DaVila”. When I started painting I practiced for 6 months in my own house before going out onto the streets. I wanted to explore my technique before I went public. I was insecure about my work. My sweet friend ”German – Stencil” encouraged me to go paint on the streets for the first time. Its thanks to him that I haven’t stopped since! Hehehe
When/Why did you start putting your art onto walls?
I started doing graffiti in 2015, in a period of my life that i was completely insecure and lost. Even before i started to paint i was very scared walking in the streets alone…so i wanted to change that. It began as a cure for me, I found myself! The main thing I love is the personal interactions – a small complement or a long conversation. Some people offer me a plate of food. It is a blessing for a grafter. To meet all kinds of people on the street and be able to paint anywhere… My art is accessible to everyone – it fulfilled me completely.
Do you paint with spray cans or do you use any other techniques or media?
I only use spray cans! One of my biggest loves in this world is the spray can. I will never forget the day i used one for the first time… i Always say that i fell in love initially with the spray can and after with the graffiti. The spray cans allows a “dance” with the wall, we use the whole body to paint, i love this!
Where do you get your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from the female empowerment. Women have always been silent and put down in so many different ways. I thought that this was my way of speaking up, a screen to the world. My ”faces” series is a criticism of beauty standards created for women, besides that my characters are always blue and greenish. I want to follow in my work more mysterious and magical line.
Which of your artworks are you most proud of (And where can we find them)?
I think the work i love the most is one of the murals i have done with Gatuno, a big one in Ipiranga, in the street of João Yasbek. It took 10 days of hard work, dedication and love. “Foram 10 dias de trabalho duro com muita dedicação e amor”. We decided to do that mural, because there was almost no graffiti work around there, it is the more industrial area. When I finished I felt we had given some light to that gray area.
Have you collaborated with other artists ?
yes! I have my dynamic duo, who is also my boyfriend Gatuno. We are producing lots of murals and developing a new identity of work together. He does animals in graffiti (focussing principally on felines). Most of our graffiti talks about nature and humans in a sphere of love with a pinch of magic. I’m very happy and proud with the direction in which our work is heading.
Do you have any artists you would like to collaborate with ?
I’m a big fan of Herakut, I’d love to make a mural with them!
Is there a dream place worldwide where you would like to create an artwork?
Well, actually i don’t have one unique place in the world, i would like to travel doing murals all around the world! Hehe
Do you have any exhibitions or upcoming art festivals?
Exhibitions for now no, but this month I’m doing my first international work related travel! I will do a live painting during a very special event in Miami… a surprise! Hehe
Thank’s a lot . Would you like to add anything else for Streetart360 readers?
I would like to say thank you for this interview, its a pleasure to tell a little about my work and my history
Thank u Clara!
