Carly Ealey “The tropical paradise beach girl”

Let me introduce you to Carly Ealey a fantastic and very creative Californian female street artist. I really love her “sunny style” and colorful artwork. I Had the chance to interview her for StreetArt360.

Hello Carly, great to meet you.

Nice to meet you as well 🙂

Where are you from?
My current home base is San Diego but I was born and raised a couple of hours away in Palm Springs, CA.

How and when did you discover art and create your first artwork?
I’ve been creating art since I was a child. I was a very shy and introverted kid that easily got lost in another world with art, whether it was drawing, painting, or clay sculpting. When I was about 7 years old, my mom enrolled me in some art classes over the Summer and I distinctly remember her coaching me to lie about my age so that I could attend the more advanced class. When I learned to watercolour at these classes is when I think I really made something of any significance.
It was a realistic painting of a duckling…kind of funny, but I remember it being “really good” at the time and something I proudly gifted to my mother.

Where was your first mural? Is it still available to see today?
Oh man…my first murals seemed to always be on temporary structures that disappeared or were painted over. My first real solo wall was inside an old parachute factory for an art exhibit in Downtown San Diego in 2013. I painted an 11 foot tall zombie-eyed nude Kate Moss and stencilled in a Louis Vuitton pattern as a background with gold spray paint and scribbled out the saying “All that glitters IS NOT gold.” I think at the time, it was a reflection of my personal loss of innocence and awakening to a lot of different things, the world and society, as a whole.

Where can we discover your murals around the world?
I have a few in San Diego of course, Del Mar, Encinitas, Tijuana MX, Los Angeles, Denver CO, Edmonton AB Canada, Napier New Zealand…one of my goals is to greatly expand this list 🙂

What is your personal favorite mural artwork?
Of my own work, I have a weird emotional connection with my mural titled ‘Immersed’ up in Edmonton AB Canada… I really pushed myself and learned so much during the process.
It really gave me an opportunity to grow as a muralist and as a human. Every new wall I paint becomes a favorite in some category, though. They are all favorites  …

Do you paint with spray cans or do you use any other techniques?
It seems like I’ve been leaning more and more toward spray paint these days…but I still love painting with brushes. I think my preferred aesthetic is a combination of both mediums. I love layering and mixing dirty with clean. It’s important to have those beautiful imperfections a.k.a. “Happy Accidents” as Bob Ross liked to call them.

Where do you get your inspiration? Any specific message in your artwork?
I’m often drawn to painting women and celestial objects as a way to interpret what I’m feeling. I like exploring human existence, spirituality, and the natural world.
My messages can vary from piece to piece, but it’s usually reflective of an emotion or idea that I’m internally meditating on whether its grief over the state of our planet or the concept of soul.

If you can describe yourself, would you say you’re a Street Artist, a Painter, an artist … or something else.
Eh, it really depends on who I’m talking to haha… I usually just say Artist and then if someone wants specifics I’m happy to share more 🙂

Do you have a “favorite” city where you love to paint? Is there a dream place around the world you would like to go for a mural artwork?
I’m a total tropical paradise beach girl…so pretty much anywhere that I can jump into the ocean after painting is ideal. Tulum is on my dream list.
I’m not a location snob, though, I hope to travel and paint anywhere and everywhere I can while I can. The connections made from meeting new people and sharing my art is one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done regardless of location.

Do you have any exhibitions and upcoming art fests in the future?
I will be exhibiting a couple of small pieces in Miami during Art Basel this year with Just Another Gallery and hopefully painting a wall while I’m there!
Hit me up if you have a good wall for me 😉

Thank’s Carly. I might have walls for you here in UK or in France, but not sure the water will be hot over here  😉
But maybe you can overcome that 🙂 It would be great!
