Here’s my interview with Mr Cenz. Enjoy!

Hi Mr Cenz,  great to meet you, can you tell us a bit more about your artist name?
When I started out I used to write ‘Cence’ and over the years it just progressed into ‘Cenz’. Its important to keep the same name so I just stuck with it. I recently added the ‘Mr’ on as there was another artist writing ‘Cenz’ and I wanted to be unique. Like most tags it has no meaning I just enjoy writing the letters.

Can you tell us where you are from?
Born and bred in South London. I still live there now with my family.

How and when did you discover art and create your first artwork?
From as long as I can remember I’ve always been into art and continuously drawing. My parents were both into art so it was encouraged. Then around 1984/5 I was exposed to the new and exciting Hip Hop movement. The music was fresh and exciting and the artwork on the New York Subway trains blew my mind. It was through the book ‘Subway Art’ that I first saw this amazing art form and from that moment on I was hooked. I learnt my trade by copying every piece from the book until I could create my own letters then I hit the streets at about 10 years old.

Where was your first mural? Is it still available to see today?
My first ever wall was when I was 11 years old on the back of a local school. It is long gone now. None of my early work is visible any more

Do you paint with spray cans or do you use any other techniques?
I use only spray paint on my walls but occasionally use acrylics and paint pens on my canvases. I am obsessed with the art of the can and always trying to push and develop my spray painting skills.

Do you primarily paint murals or do you paint on other canvas?
Ever since the early days I have always painted on canvas as well. Now I do a lot of canvas work in my studio. My canvases are like mini murals but with superfine and delicate details.

If you can describe yourself, would you say you’re a Street Artist, a Painter, an artist … or something else?
I still think of myself as a graffiti artist. This is because I still paint letters and I only use spray paint. Graffiti art is where it all started for me and is still important part of my history, which I like to keep alive. I don’t like labels though and like to think that I sit on the fence between the street and graffiti art divide.

Where do you get your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from my drive to always improve and create artwork on another level. I’m trying to push graffiti/street art into the future with my style and am always trying to blow peoples minds with innovative techniques. For my portraits my first inspiration is a great reference photo, with great lighting. This is all I use to create my works. From just looking at the image I breakdown the shapes and forms in my own unique way. The result is a mysterious and psychedelic drug fuelled version.

Where can we discover your murals around the world?
I have been lucky enough to travel lots over the last few years to some amazing places. I currently have murals in Berlin, Denver, Miami, Paris, Basel, Switzerland,
I have traveled a lot in the last few years and have murals in lots of places, which can still be seen.

What is your personal favorite mural artwork?
This is a difficult question as I don’t normally like what I have painted for long after its finished. I am always looking to improve and do better so my artworks have a short shelf life for me. My current favorite is a huge mural in Berlin painted in May of this year.

Did you collab with other artists ? Do you have any artists you would like to collab with in the future?
I don’t really do many collaborations. I would love to do more and have a list of my favorite writers I want to work with- watch out for a future collaboration project coming soon.

Do you have a “favorite” city where you love to paint ? Is there a dream place around the world you would like to go for a mural artwork?
Well I would have to say my favorite place is Denver, Colorado. I have been lucky enough to visit twice and the energy and love for graffiti/street art there never ceases to amaze me. I’m always looking for new and exciting places to paint and my Wish list is a long one.

Do you have any exhibitions and upcoming art fests in the future?
I have a solo show called ‘Expansions’ coming up at Gallerie Bartoux in Normandie, France opening on 28th October and running until the new year. Then I am off to Basel in Switzerland for festival, which should be good fun. I have had a busy year travelling a lot so for the end of the year I will be staying at home and creating lots of new walls in London.
