There were so many people there on Saturday 30th September to celebrate the 10 anniversary of the M.U.R Oberkampf and this was for such a very good reason!
This open-sky gallery in the heart of the City of Lights has been an ongoing event in the 11th district of Paris for now 10 consecutive years and offers us the possibility to see live street art and graffiti performances.
Every year, the association the M.U.R (support Modulable, Urbain et Réactif) created by Jean Faucheurand Thom Thom, collaborates with 2 artists per month (this is 24 artists per year!) for art lovers pleasure and in the true ephemeral spirit of street art and graffiti therefore twice a month the M.U.R is erased, repainted in black then covered again by a new artwork!
This is an endless repetitive cycle for urban culture lovers! The M.U.R is also a great opportunity to discover the amazing diversity of styles, techniques and methods within an artistic movement which is called urban art, resulting both from graffiti and street art linked to the teaching also of academics such as Fine Arts and Design Schools.
This Board no longer represents what was once a simple advertising panel surrounded by its wavy green plastic which left its name to the place Verte (the color Green in French ), nowadays its constantly tagged and redecorated by the “night birds” of the famous underground district and alternative culture of Oberkampf district!
Here, now in the reverse, artists are selected and invited to express themselves on the subject of their choice under the umbrella of the Association and also Paris council.
The festivities began with several DJ’s who succeeded one another within a tent installed on the other side of the M.U.R (It was raining!) Aficionados, neighbors, curious people, tourists and artists … all gathered around the founders and team of M.U.R to celebrate with drinks and to greet or exchange the latest news and art discoveries in the neighborhood!
At nightfall, the M.U.R painted in white for the occasion, filled with the most beautiful frescoes through an installation video that within a few minutes allows us to relive the most beautiful moments of this iconic place!
An Unexpected Performance of red haired Dancers, just like a living picture itself appears, although it’s still the M.U.R that has the focus of attention.
This artistic project has attracted a huge audience, and many artists present and dedicate their “page” on the books edited by M.U.R
The most adventurous of us ventured on to the New Casino, a night club near the M.U.R, free entrance for the occasion, and danced until the early hours of the morning!
Once the festivities were over, many met on the Place Verte, early morning risers and guest artists here for the new M.U.R performance (# 243) by Brusk, of the DMV, “Da Mental Vaporz”, helped by his partner Ema, ready to cover the M.U.R with a new amazing colored fresco!
It’s early, it’s raining, we drink a coffee to warm up and little by little, we recognize the shape that is being born in front of our eyes, it was definitely worth getting up early for (or even not going to bed !)
One immediately guesses a snake or rather the skin that disintegrates from the body, tears and flows …
Here is Brusk and Ema’s famous technique, the “dripping style,” smears of paintings that replace the stroke of the drawing and bring light and volume!
Stunning, when you see the body of the snake turn into a wall of floppy and tagged stones … which announces a new era begining …
Can we predict M.U.R will continue for the next 10 years ?? … We hope!
Next artists: Monkey bird (performance # 244) on 14th October and NOON (performance # 245) on November 4th.
Street Art is ephemeral, masterpieces succeed masterpieces at M.U.R Oberkampf.
